MEET THE TEAM

Our team has many years of experience in the insurance industry, the majority having previously worked either as brokers or underwriters in the London and / or overseas insurance markets.

MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS (Non Executive)
 

Derek Thornton
Chairman

Derek was appointed Non-Executive Chairman of MIB in July 2010. He is the Immediate Past Chairman of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA), a Past President of the Insurance Institute of London and was also the Founding Chairman of the Chartered Insurance Institute's London Market Faculty.

Derek has held senior positions in a number of major international Lloyd's brokers including Sedgwick Forbes, Jardine UK, Fenchurch plc, Lambert Fenchurch and Heath Lambert. Latterly, through his Executive Chairmanship of Heath Lambert's UK Wholesale Division (FSJ) and his Chairmanship of BIBA he has become a well known and respected figure within the UK insurance industry. He was a Holdings Board Director of Fenchurch whilst quoted on the LSE and was heavily involved through the subsequent merger and refinancing process that eventually resulted in the establishment of Heath Lambert.

Derek is currently also an Associate of ‘4Change Ltd’, a management consultancy specialising in financial services.

Derek holds an Honours Degree in Physics and Mathematics. He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Chartered Insurance Broker. Derek was elected as an Annual Subscriber to Lloyd's in 1983 and a Non-Underwriting Working Member of Lloyd's in 1999.

Mehran Eftekhar
Group Finance Director

Mehran has held the role of Group Finance Director of the Nest Group of Companies (the ultimate parent of MIB) since 1995.

Mehran is a UK Qualified Chartered Accountant with 30 years of experience in both professional firms and the insurance industry.

Previously for 11 years he was a senior partner with PKF Cyprus, the international audit and consultancy services firm.

He serves on a number of Boards within the Nest Group as well as Audit and Risk committees.

Mufid Sukkar
Director

Mufid has over 30 years professional experience working as a director, senior manager, programme manager and business consultant. He has worked with a number of major organisations including Logica, PwC, Levi Strauss, Royal Bank of Scotland, PHH Corporation, General Electric and UK Central Government.

Mufid’s experience and skills extend across a wide area including strategic, business and operational planning; corporate governance; business and product development; human resources; organisational structure and information technology.

Since February 2008, Mufid has held the post of Chief Strategy Officer to The Nest Group of Companies. He is responsible for setting standards for and implementing strategic/operational planning, corporate governance and organisational re-structuring with in loco responsibilities for Group Human Resources.

Mufid holds a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering.

Hugh Bohling
Director

Hugh joined the Board of MIB in 2009.

Hugh is an experienced corporate and commercial Solicitor with international insurance industry focus since 1984, including Lloyd’s and London Company market, acting for underwriters and brokers. Hugh is principal of his own specialist firm, CityNet Law.

Prior to establishing CityNet Law in May 2006, Hugh was a partner for 19 years, 10 years with Eversheds LLP (1996-2006) and 9 years with the niche insurance firm of Waltons & Morse (1987-1996). Hugh trained with Allen & Overy and was educated at St Catharine`s College Cambridge.

Hugh has two other current non-executive directorships in the London market and was on the Board of Trust International and Reinsurance Company in Bahrain, a related company of MIB, for 3 years from 2006.

Prof. Derek Atkins
Director

Derek is a chartered engineer, fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and formerly UK Strategy Director for Royal & Sun Alliance. With over 30 years practical experience of the international insurance industry in risk management, underwriting and corporate functions, he now teaches strategy on the Cass Business School MSc. course and runs in-house management development courses for insurers.

He has co-authored eleven books on risk management and insurance including Reputational Risk: A Question of Trust .He has been a member of two UK governmental working groups on Risk related issues and is a recipient of the CII Exceptional Service Medal for contribution to the industry.

Derek is also Chairman of the Risk Committee of Trust Re, Bahrain

Simon Radford
Managing Director of Operations

Simon is responsible for the development, negotiation and placement of a comprehensive and varied range of reinsurance solutions for MIB’s clients. 

He is a Member of the Board of Directors and is responsible for day-to-day operations and additionally specialises in treaty reinsurance programmes.  Simon was one of the founding members of MIB and oversaw our accreditation at Lloyd’s in 2004.

Simon has nearly 30 years of experience in the international reinsurance market.  During his career he has worked with major London Reinsurance brokers where he handled the treaty reinsurance business of clients in the Middle East and Africa.

Atul Sudra
Director - Finance

Atul joined MIB during May 2010 as Director – Finance.

He is a Qualified Accountant with 15 years of experience at senior finance positions within both the Insurance and Banking Sectors.

Atul previously held a senior finance position at Principle Insurance Holdings and prior to that was financial controller at the Portman Building Society.

Nigel Piers
Director - Special Projects

Nigel’s role at MIB is Director of complex and innovative projects. 

His specialist areas include aviation, energy and mining, industrial and commercial property, life, personal accident and medical covers, marine and professional risks.
Nigel has been in the insurance industry for over 30 years, initially working as an underwriter dealing with UK domestic business and then as a reinsurance underwriter with a leader in the London Energy Market.  Following this he spent 10 years working in the Middle East as an underwriter dealing with all classes of insurance.  Nigel then returned to the UK to work as a broker in the London Market, dealing primarily with energy, marine, property and casualty risks.

Nigel has extensive insurance experience in respect of the Middle East, the Indian Sub-Continent, South East Asia and countries in the Former Soviet Union.

Osman Gursoy

Osman joined MIB in 2009 and manages the MIB office in Paris. He is primarily responsible for developing and servicing business from European markets as well as from Turkey and the Turkic States. He also works closely with MIB London in respect of business emanating from the Middle East and North Africa.

A civil engineer by education, Osman started his insurance career as an engineering underwriter. He holds an MBA in finance and has held senior positions in leading regional and multinational firms as a reinsurance broker, both in the UK and in France. Osman also has considerable experience in direct insurance in Turkey where he worked as a Group Manager with a local insurer.

He has extensive knowledge of Marine and Non-Marine treaties with an emphasis on the mitigation of natural hazards. He often assists clients to develop reinsurance solutions with the aid of commercial modeling tools. Osman’s expertise also extends to property and specialty insurances and he has been instrumental in developing innovative reinsurance solutions for highly specialised specie risks.
